Hurrah! Finally! BES v5.0 has been released. Everywhere in BlackBerry land you can see impressions, download kits, get a hold of the documentation, etc.

But what you want to know is: Does it work?

  • We have installed it on a live BES server, over the top of BES 4.1.6, running Domino 8.5. And - it does!
  • One issue we had was being able to log into the administration screen afterwards. Its all web based now (hurrah!), and relies/requires SSL style certificate authentication. etc. On top of a Live domino server. This bit might get.. interesting..
. What else ? it looks pretty much like a BES 416 installer - so quite irritating, requires a reboot in the middle. Same old, same old.

We shall keep you posted on stability, etc, as it progresses.

Disclaimer> Do not try this on a live production server without backups, reading the documentation, trying it out on a test server, making sure all your third party applications work, etc. Remember: we cut corners so you dont have to.

Gravatar Image1 - Laird Buchan - did you have a chance to test the new high availability features?

Gravatar Image2 - Thanks, Bill. We, too, made the same upgrade from 4.1.6 to 5.0 and had the same issue with the admin interface. The simple fix was to change the port that BES uses for SSL from 443 to some other unused port. As soon as we did that, rebooted the server and updated the administration url in our browser with the updated port number, all was well. Good luck!

Gravatar Image3 - Thanks Bill,

Keep the updates flowing. I'm looking forward to hear what you think of the HA, file share capabilities, OTA upgrades etc.

Any chance you have the resources to compare with Neverfail?

Your canny/candid opinion is always appreciated.

Cheers mate.

Well duh. It's Windows, of course it will require a reboot. This is not because of any limitation on behalf of the installer, it's the only way we can get round stupid Windows Service and Registry limits. Emoticon

Gravatar Image5 - Thanks Mr. Buchan. Good to see you alive on PL.

Just clarifying, are you saying that the Domino server that resides on the BES must be preconfigured with SSL prior to the 5.0 upgrade?

If Yes, that will be interesting.

Gravatar Image6 - It wasn't my intention to surface on planetLotus.org again, but as this is a shared blog site, I shall have to grin and bear it.

No. The BES server seems to put up its own web site, create its own SSL keys, etc. No Domino stuff was *required* to get it to install but do bear in mind that I gave this a ground-zero test.

That is - I didnt read a word of documentation and just let it rip. Because this is what will happen out there, and I wanted to see what would happen.

Next week, I'll absorb the new documentation, perhaps do the new tests and deconstruct the mess that I've created..
