Looking ahead to mobilisation sessions at Lotusphere 2010

So now its the run up to Lotusphere 2010 and once again I'm pleased to see that RIM are a major sponsor, and that the Lotus Quickr and Lotus Connections Clients we saw at UKLUG have now been launched. For me this all reflects a continuing partnership between Lotus and RIM around the mobilisation of Lotus-based business enterprise apps.

Checking through the agenda and Lotusphere has some interesting sessions on mobilisation, and here are a couple I plan to catch:

ID618 'Lotus + BlackBerry = Enterprise Mobility', an overview of Lotus and RIM's partnership, the new Lotus Clients and how they are looking to provide a mobilisation infrastructure. This sessions is presented by Jen Stevenson, Enterprise Technologies Manager for IBM Technologies at RIM.

BP212 'Delivering IBM Lotus Domino to Mobile Devices: Top 10 Mobile Browser Dev Tricks - and More!' with Rob Wunderlich and John Wargo (who's book on BB development Jason Hook previously reviewed on this site).

SHOW113 My colleague here at The Turtle Partnership - Tim Davis - is presenting again on 'Integrating IBM Lotus Domino Data and Applications on Smartphones, BlackBerry's and Apple iPhones'. "If you’re an Admin who needs to understand how to work with Lotus Domino data on a variety of mobile devices or a developer who needs to know how to code a "one size fits all" design re-usable for multiple user interfaces, then don't miss this session!"

We have also issued our BlackBerry Lotusphere sessions app again - and its also now available on BB App World too. IBM Lotus have also produced a Lotusphere sessions app and you can find it over at Lotusphere Online.

It seems to have been a good time for RIM, their last quarterly profits are way up, they shipped a record 10m devices in a single quarter and their share of the critical smartphone sector has increased. Looking ahead its likely that the competition in the smartphone sector will ramp up even more 2010 - its the big growth area in an otherwise moribund mobile market. Well at least in the mature Western markets, I see that China Mobile is now the world's biggest mobile operator but it only has 37% penetration of the vast Chinese rural market. The rise and rise of the mobile phone is pretty awe-inspiring.

And finally......

Does your BlackBerry need spiritual uplift? Well at a special service at St Lawrence Jewry church in London BlackBerrys were blessed as 'a daily working tool', along with laptops and other devices. Its based on an old ceremony where a village's ploughs would be blessed each year.

RIM show new Lotus Quickr, Connections and Sametime Clients for the BlackBerry at UKLUG

Jen Stevenson, RIM Enterprise Product Manager IBM Technologies, presented a session on 'Leveraging the power of BlackBerry Mobility' at the UK Lotus User Group 2009 in Edinburgh. Jen's session focused on the new range of Lotus Clients for the BlackBerry that are coming in Q4.

However before we move on to them its worth noting that underpinning those new Clients is RIM's close relationship with Lotus. As Jen emphasised their development teams interact together across the whole range of Lotus products. This relationship has not come overnight but is the result of a sustained effort on both sides - and I for one think this is great given the rise of mobilisation as an emerging need for business applications. RIM do appear to have a more committed and fruitful relationship with IBM than other mobile device providers I could mention.

The new BlackBerry Clients on parade were:

The new Sametime 2.5 Client which will push presence further and have a richer and 'globalised' functionality. Release is due in November.

Connections 2.3 Client has added functionality with easier 'more fluid' use and is more integrated into the BlackBerry device. This will work with 4.6/4.7/5.0 on the device. Release is due in December.

The new Quickr 1.0 Client which has focused on easy and intuitive use. Its J2EE based and will work with 4.6/4.7/5.0 on the device. Release is due in December.

Jen also mentioned that the focus at Lotusphere 2010 would be on taking BlackBerry applications 'to the next level', moving beyond web applications.

Standing back from UKLUG I had a meeting this week with a major UK comms service provider and they told me that their mobile business is now focusing on smartphones as the market-leading sector. Basically its the hot area of an otherwise flat market. Unsurprisingly they said that this 'hot' smartphone sector is led by RIM and Apple, with only a small percentage for MS.

Back from the Lotus Leadership Alliance 2009 in Boston where selected customers and Business Partners get together to discuss future strategy and share feedback on real-life experience. So it was interesting to see a good turnout there from RIM, both Jen Stevenson - RIM Enterprise Product Manager IBM Technologies - and Neil Saungikar - RIM Product Manager, Software Product Management Group - were at LoLA.

Neil has come in to take over from Valerie Wang who has been promoted within RIM, and can I just say here that in my opinion Valerie did a great job in helping build bridges between the Lotus and RIM teams.

Having Jen and Neil there does emphasise the ongoing close relationship between Lotus and RIM. I have said this before but RIM's continuing commitment to working with Lotus on mobility and smartphones impresses me. Its worth noting that smartphones are the fastest growing sector of a mobile device market that is pretty flat elsewhere, and the only two players there are BlackBerry and iPhone.

A further example of that relationship was earlier this week when Jen Stevenson gave the attendees at Collaboration University London a sneak peek at the BlackBerry Quickr Client. I hear it went down well!

INI file access via a Storm, a BES 4 Bug and World Smartphone Trends.

A little while ago Rudi Knegt at RKJ-Soft kindly agreed to let us link up to his notes.ini database. We ported it to the BlackBerry platform so you can search through all of the thousands of current entries using any part of the notes.ini setting or its description.

Well Tim Davis has now produced a specialised version of the Notes INI specifically for the BlackBerry Storm. You can install the Storm version OTA by going to http://lotusphere.turtleweb.com/notesini2.jad

You can still download the app if you have a different BlackBerry device than a Storm, to install the standard BB notes.ini application OTA go to http://lotusphere.turtleweb.com/notesini.jad

The initial load of data can take a couple of minutes and you will see it updating the record count as it goes. Any problems or suggested enhancements please let me know.

My colleague Gabriella has blogged about "an unpleasant bug from RIM for 4.1.6 Maintenance Release 5 which was new out at the end of April.  Basically if you attempt to move users from one BES to another with MR5 installed it may or may not work (with 10 people tested, 5 worked, 5 stopped working until they were moved back).  The servers in this case were 4.1.6 servers but the same applies to 5.0 servers." Gabriella says there is a private  hotfix and you can see her blog piece here.

It is interesting that BlackBerry and iPhone smartphones have bucked the worldwide market trend in the first quarter of 2009. According to Gartner they have both increased their sales in a falling mobile/cell phone market. The reasons for their sales success include the wider capability of smartphones, more aggressive pricing and their widespread use for social software. Interestingly use for social software is especially relevant for BlackBerrys rather than iPhones.

Its only over a single quarter but it reflects Tim Berners-Lee's view back in March that the future for the internet as we know it is in mobile/cell phones, and also IBM's prediction of one billion mobile Web users by 2011 and a significant shift in the way the majority of people will interact with the Web over the next decade.

BlackBerry - So secure 9 out of 10 criminals prefer it!

Category
Bookmark : del.icio.us  Technorati  Digg This  Add To Furl  Add To YahooMyWeb  Add To Reddit  Add To NewsVine

Well I suppose you could call this a back-handed compliment? Canadian Police are concerned, they say that criminals prefer using BlackBerrys because the devices are so secure they cant be tapped.

"The problem is that BlackBerry smartphones, designed by Waterloo, Ont.-based Research In Motion initially for corporate clients, run software called the BlackBerry Enterprise Server that creates a secure and private network and encrypts data."

A Canadian MP is asking that the government to force Smartphone manufacturers to provide ways to tap their phones and of course there is strong resistance on privacy grounds to that. Strikes me that making authorised 'back doors' into personal devices opens a huge can of worms, so I suspect this argument will run and run.

You can see the whole story over here.

The irresistible rise of the Smartphone

Category
Bookmark : del.icio.us  Technorati  Digg This  Add To Furl  Add To YahooMyWeb  Add To Reddit  Add To NewsVine

I have said this before but the potential for Smartphones is huge - 4 billion people on our planet have mobiles/cellphones while only around a paltry 2 billion have a PC, at the same time IBM's Institute for Business Value predicts a massive shift to internet access via mobile devices (they estimate 1 billion mobile web users by 2011). This move to mobile internet use also ties in with a change in people's internet usage - increasingly they are using online time to communicate using social software, not just to find info.

So there is a lot to play for and thus a lot of new Smartphones aimed right at that market.

With all this activity it is worth considering that in this sector BlackBerry is still the one to beat. According to ITProPortal there are over 21 million BlackBerry users worldwide which means that RIM's back-end infrastructure is dealing with 4 terabytes of data every hour - that's an impressive proven user base.

More than that in my view BlackBerry still leads the pack of Smartphones when it comes to corporate use. The reason? Well we can talk about the pros and cons of individual devices but for corporate use the key for me is administration. BlackBerry gives you the ability to centrally administer your BlackBerrys right down to functionality on an individual device. I know - admin is dull - but when you run a stable of devices day-in day-out then effective admin is vital.

Our own Tim Davis has blogged about his Show and Tell session with Jason Hook at Lotusphere 2009 - 'SHOW109 Developing Mobile Applications - Techniques for Running Big Applications on Small Devices'. This session focused primarily on BlackBerry development with a small segment on the iPhone. You can see Tim's blog entry and get copies of his slides here.

Jason has told me that he will also be blogging about this session shortly.

To give you some background 'Show and Tell' was a new track at Lotusphere which replaced the 'Hands On' track by producing presentations with step-by-step screen-by-screen documentation on a particular subject. Feedback on this new track has been positive, certainly there was a pretty good turnout for Tim and Jason's session despite it starting very early in the morning.

BlackBerry and Lotus get closer at Lotusphere 2009

Category
Bookmark : del.icio.us  Technorati  Digg This  Add To Furl  Add To YahooMyWeb  Add To Reddit  Add To NewsVine

If there is one thing that I took away from Lotusphere 2009 its the change in the relationship between BlackBerry and Lotus. Its much closer at all levels - and the best example was that this year RIM was literally centre stage at the Lotusphere Opening General Session. Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO of RIM, stood on the stage at Orlando and pledged support for Lotus software - including Quickr, Symphony and Connections.

As I see it a couple of underlying currents emerged at Lotusphere 2009.

The need to mobilise business applications had long been a theme at RIM's own Lotusphere sessions - but now it was a major Lotus theme at the OGS. As Bob Picciano, General Manager at IBM Lotus Software, said 'new Lotus collaboration features and developer tools on the BlackBerry platform will deliver productivity beyond the office extending IBM software and services so that individuals can access all of the resources they need to keep their business moving, anytime, anywhere.' That's very publicly stated proof that Lotus are strongly behind the concept of apps mobilisation - and a public acknowledgement of RIM as a partner to deliver it.

Meanwhile RIM has continued to evolve its strategic view of the BlackBerry as a flexible software platform. This is reflected in their new dedicated software team, their continuing investment in product development (interesting to hear that RIM are hiring despite the current economic climate) and their ongoing work with Lotus. Of course Lotus and RIM have worked together for some time but now its at a whole new level, with the BlackBerry software team talking direct with the Lotus developers.

The fruits of this investment and of closer ties to Lotus were clear at the show. To take some examples - extending X-pages to the BB platform, support for Lotus Symphony docs (from BES 5.0 which is due in March), the new enhanced Lotus Connections Client announced at Lotusphere, a new Quickr Client (due 3rd quarter 2009), new Sametime for the BB (with better address book integration, ability to send chats as email, emoticons and presence on the home screen). And there is more in the pipeline.

So its been good to see RIM and Lotus getting closer, and showing public commitment to their partnership.

Once again this year you can download our free BlackBerry version of Genii's Lotusphere 2009 Sessions database.

To download simply browse on your BlackBerry to http://lotusphere.turtleweb.com/bb

After you install the app just click on "Load Data" to get all the Sessions info.

The Sessions database does have a few gaps left as certain times are finalised. However you can fill them in after you install - just  choose "Load Data' again from the app main menu anytime to get an update directly from the Sessions database itself.

Besides the ability to add sessions to your Calendar on the BlackBerry we have also included Genii's 'Feedback' form this year. This allows you to post questions and comments in response to a Session.

Hope you find our Sessions app useful and please let me know how you get on with it.

Our own Tim Davis and Jason Hook from Notesberry will be presenting at Lotusphere 2009 in the new "Show and Tell" track. They will team up together to present 'Developing Mobile Applications - Techniques for Running Big Applications on Small Devices' (that's presentation code SHOW109).

Tim and Jason will take you through the steps needed to get a Domino application made available on mobile devices, such as mobile browsers and BlackBerrys.  Jason will be talking through how to create a consistent browser UI that will work across the variety of mobile browsers, covering the various standards, tools and tricks you need to know. Tim plans to use his BlackBerry Lotusphere Sessions Application (which is based on Genii's Lotusphere Sessions Database) to illustrate the development techniques he uses. Tim will then go further and talk about pushing data out from Domino to your BlackBerry applications.

Bill Buchan, Paul Mooney (both of them are presenting sessions again this year) and myself will also be at Lotusphere in January. So hope to see you there.

Free online presentation on BES logging and monitoring

Category
Bookmark : del.icio.us  Technorati  Digg This  Add To Furl  Add To YahooMyWeb  Add To Reddit  Add To NewsVine

Interested in hearing more about logging and monitoring on your BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES)? Well my colleague Gabriella Davis will be giving an online presentation at the next Lotus User Group Virtual Meeting.

The BES integrates tightly with your Lotus Domino environment but its many services actually sit outside Domino and are not readily accessible to, or understood by, most Domino Admins. So this presentation will take you through how to monitor each of the BES services and what they do.

Gabriella will be taking a look at the extensive logging operations available for the BES server and each of the services, while delving into some sample logs to help you understand what your BlackBerry server is doing. She will also take a look at some tools in the BES Resource Kit that help you analyze your server activity and identify problems.

This session is ideal for anyone who is fearful their BlackBerry server 'just runs itself' and wants to achieve a greater level of control and tracking of BlackBerry activity, such as:
  • Discovering the meaning of common Domino console commands you are seeing.
  • Learning how to configure BES logging and enhanced logging for specific services.
  • Generating revealing statistics and performing insightful log analysis with the BES Resource Kit.

So please join her at 12:00 noon Eastern (GMT -5) on November 17, 2008. Then after the presentation you can participate in the online discussion forum that same week which will be moderated by Gabriella. In the forum you can ask additional questions, provide feedback on the presentation, or share your knowledge and experience on the topic with the rest of the Lotus community

The presentation is free to Lotus User Group Members and LUG membership is free. You do need to pre-register, so please register today at http://www.LotusUserGroup.org/VUG

Gabriella is Technical Director here at The Turtle Partnership. Her role is high level administration and consultancy on Lotus and BlackBerry products supporting customers with over 60 domains, 400 servers and 30,000 plus users. She is an IBM Advanced Administrator and Developer for v7, certified for v8 and a CLI. She has been a speaker at Lotusphere and other technical conferences in the US and Europe.

So far so good with my BlackBerry Bold

Category
Bookmark : del.icio.us  Technorati  Digg This  Add To Furl  Add To YahooMyWeb  Add To Reddit  Add To NewsVine

Well I must admit to a bit of "Xmas Morning" excitement when the Bold arrived from O2 in its cool black box. So what are my first impressions after a few days use?
  • The device itself does look smart, its slightly larger than my old Pearl but not that bulky and I use the same holster for it.
  • I like the clear and sharp screen. I also like the "white etched out of black" UI design - the clock is my favourite example.
  • The full keyboard was easy to use even with my "sausage fingers" mainly due to some clever contouring on the keys. While the trackball is precise and bounces from item to item very smoothly.
  • Setting up my Domino mail was straightforward, as was getting Sametime up and running. For Sametime we used the 8800 Client and just a little tweak on the port used.
  • The UI has quite a few icons amongst several folders so I reshuffled them to help usability. I just moved icons about to make sure that Mail, SMS Messages (its a separate box), Calendar, Browser, Sametime and Keyboard Lock are always shown first.
  • In the office I use WiFi while outside its shifts to GPRS. No usage problems with either route, and the transition between them is pretty seamless.
  • Battery life has been good - I can leave it over the weekend between recharges. No different to the Pearl really.
  • The browser is much improved over the Pearl, and the camera is not bad (though we took the attached image with another Bold - of course that could be the craftsman not the tool!).
  • Crucially it now comes with 4 games preloaded - our old friend BrickBreaker plus WordMole, Texas Hold'em, Sudoko and Klondike. My rail journeys will fly by.

So what has been the downside of the Bold? Well I have yet to run into any of the software issues that I have heard about. My only gripe is that Google Maps won't load, its some sort of bug that freezes the load after about 10% and according to several BlackBerry sites other Bold users have had his problem too.

Overall then a good experience with the Bold so far.

I see that elsewhere a Mr Ed Brill of IBM Lotus has also commented on his new Bold, you can see that here.

IBM paper on Lotus Domino and BES performance best practices, plus a staggering statistic.

Thanks to Eric from Reno in Nevada for flagging a paper by Aaron Pane on "IBM Lotus Domino with BlackBerry Enterprise Server: Performance best practices":

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/lotus/library/domino-blackberry/index.html?S_TACT=105AGX13&S_CMP=EDU

And though its not strictly BlackBerry related here is a statistic I find staggering. By the end of this year its expected that mobile phone penetration of the world's population will reach 61%. That will be something like 4 billion phones. Now compare that to an online population of about 1 billion and the fact that by 2014 its estimated that there will "only" be 2 billion PCs in use. You can see why RIM, Apple etc get very, very excited about the potential market for web-enabled smartphones.

BlackBerry session at UKLUG - and a couple of comments about the iPhone

Last week was the excellent UK Lotus User Group conference and there was a BlackBerry session presented by Jen Ortiz of RIM. Jen is Global Technical Account Manager but will shortly be moving back to Canada to take on Valerie Wang's role of Product Manager For IBM Technologies (you may have seen Valerie at Lotusphere or ILUG).

Jen's presentation emphasised RIM's good relations with Lotus and mentioned that there were now 13,750 Domino BES servers worldwide.

Interestingly Jen stated that BES virtualisation was growing in Europe (though less so in the USA) and that RIM's developer were working to help this process. She also mentioned that RIM are considering other platforms for the BES.

RIM are also working on Quickr for BlackBerry and would like to hear from organisations who are interested in the potential of this combination. If you are then please drop us a line here at Notesberry and we will pass it on to RIM.

UKLUG also had a "Gurupalooza" where all the speakers climb onto a stage and get asked questions. One question asked was their view of the iPhone and interestingly Paul Mooney said that while the iPhone was a great device in his view it was not ready to be a corporate mobile solution. Paul has already commented on this in his own blog here.

When asked about the iPhone outside her session Jen Ortiz gave an interesting view that the iPhone is a cool personal phone that people are trying to enterprise while BlackBerry is an enterprise device that they now need to personalise. And just to back that up she had a very nice BlackBerry Bold, a new flip-top Pearl and an all pink Pearl on show.

Once again BlackBerry are sponsoring the UK Lotus User Group 2008 conference on the 18th and 19th September. The guys from RIM will also be presenting and have a stand in the sponsor section.

Its worth noting that UKLUG will again be free thanks to the generosity of sponsors like RIM. But more than that RIM's significant investment in sponsorship both at UKLUG and elsewhere (the Irish Lotus User Group conference comes to mind) does reflect a consistent commitment to Lotus.

Of course some of Notesberry's contributors will be at UKLUG too - including Bill Buchan, Paul Mooney (Bill and Paul are both presenting) and Tim Davis. So if you see them be sure to say hello.

New BlackBerry "Thunder" enters the arena

I see that Stuart McIntyre and Andy Donaldson have found some pix of the BlackBerry "Thunder" aka the 9500, the planned multimedia champion in the faceoff between the iPhone and BlackBerry. Its a very handsome device with a big screen and access to a music library.

Personally I am trying to keep a balance between the emotional and the rational when looking at new devices (OK, I admit its not easy). If you strip it all down to basics a handheld device is a tool for a specific business purpose, and its only the tip of a multi-layered process that delivers your mail and applications to you. Beauty might be skin deep, but practicality goes to the bone.

ILUG was a great event, and thanks to RIM for sponsoring

ILUG went off very well last week, and that is a credit to the team who spent so much time setting it up - hats off to Paul Mooney, Bill Buchan, Warren Elsmore, Rob Novak, Julian Woodward, Kitty Elsmore, Matt White, Eileen Fitzgerald, Tom Duff and all the crew. There were hundreds of attendees (from 24 countries), the speakers were great, the organisation was brilliant, but more than that they delivered a relaxed and friendly event that had the "Lotusphere buzz" that is so hard to generate outside Orlando.

RIM were Platinum (that's the highest level) ILUG Sponsors again, in other words they really helped make ILUG happen. They also sent key people to Dublin including Valerie Wang, Jen Ortiz and Lizzie Hancock, Senior Manager Technical Marketing EMEA. For me that's pretty hard evidence of RIM's stated commitment to the IBM Lotus community and they too are due some applause.

Valerie Wang, Product Manager for IBM technologies at RIM, presented "Taking Lotus Collaboration beyond the office on your BlackBerry Smartphone". Valerie underlined the close relationship between RIM and IBM and outlined how they are mobilising the Lotus range of collaboration tools. As at Lotusphere Valerie emphasised the value of going beyond messaging to make your enterprise apps mobile and gave some good pointers to successful development. Valerie also covered the forthcoming BES 4.1.6 release - including the increased use of Sametime presence, emoticons and support for Sametime 8.

Jen Ortiz, RIM Global Technical Account Manager, and Valerie also took part in the "Speedsponsoring" - The Idea: Each sponsor presents on one cool thing in a five minute timed demo - then repeats it 16 times as a new audience clusters round! The Result: A sort of manic double-speed IT streetmarket and a lot of fun. Jen and Valerie presented a neat little BES tool called "Pusher" that lets you centrally emplace and manage a browser bookmark icon on all the BlackBerrys in your organisation.

One last bonus was that Jen also had the new BlackBerry Bold which looked very cool. Hope to have more about the Bold soon.

Packing my bags ready to get going to ILUG 2008 in Dublin, and really looking forward to what should be another great event. Can I just say kudos to RIM as they are shiny bright Platinum Sponsors again this year, in other words they really help make ILUG happen.

OK, looking  at the agenda the BlackBerry highlights to catch are:

Wednesday - "Automating User and Group Management for Domino, Active Directory and BlackBerry. Or 'how to save a buttload of work" - Bill Buchan will take you through how HADSL specialise in the automation, integration and delegation of all user and group management across Lotus Domino, Active Directory and BlackBerry. This means that you can delegate all your day-to-day user management to someone on the helpdesk (or even HR!), confident that only what YOU allow will be implemented, whilst increasing security.

Thursday - "Taking Lotus Collaboration beyond the office on your BlackBerry Smartphone" - Valerie Wang, Product Manager for IBM technologies at RIM will be talking about how you can use the BlackBerry development platform to mobilise your enterprise applications as well as how the close collaboration between IBM Lotus and RIM have led to even more Lotus collaboration and communication tools such as Sametime and Connections, available for BlackBerry smartphones. I saw Valerie present at Lotusphere and she was very good.

Friday - "Ask the BES Adminstrator" - Jen Ortiz of RIM will be back at ILUG again this year for a highly interactive session which will give you the opportunity to ask questions, hear about Best Practice and see a BES in action - so bring along your questions and devices.

And of course some other Notesberry people will be there too, like Paul Mooney and Tim Davis. Plus a crew from RIM too.

So hope you can make it, and see you there if you can.

The agenda for ILUG in Dublin has now been published. Once again RIM are major sponsors of this excellent free Lotus technical event, and its good to see they have sent a key BlackBerry speaker.

Valerie Wang, RIM Product Manager for IBM Technologies, will be presenting "Taking Lotus Collaboration beyond the office on your BlackBerry smartphone" on the second day of ILUG. You may have already seen Valerie at Lotusphere in January where she presented the main BlackBerry & Lotus sessions. At ILUG Valerie will cover a key theme from RIM - how you can effectively mobilise your Lotus infrastructure and applications using the BlackBerry.

Using the BlackBerry Client for Lotus Connections

Back at Lotusphere RIM outlined their vision to mobilise the whole family of Lotus software. Effective collaboration is critical to business success, so it makes sense that key collaboration tools should be to hand whenever and wherever you need them. So as part of this vision RIM have been working on a new BlackBerry client for Lotus Connections.

Its still currently under development but Darren Adams of IBM has been trying it out on his own BlackBerry and he seems pretty impressed with its immediate usefulness. You can see Darren's comments about it here

BlackBerry had a good 2007

Not really Domino related but BlackBerry has nearly doubled its revenues in the past year - there are now 14 million BlackBerry accounts worldwide. A good performance, especially when the rest of the high-end handheld market is apparently not doing that great.

Met up with the BlackBerry team at the "Lotusphere Comes To You" event in London. They told me that the revised BES 4.1.5 will be available on April 15th. I did ask if that date had been written in ink or pencil - "no, blood". I think RIM are pretty serious about getting this version released.

BlackBerry will also have a stand at the "Lotusphere Comes To You" event in Manchester tomorrow if you are coming along.

Sametime licensing flavours and the BlackBerry (Updated)

Category
Bookmark : del.icio.us  Technorati  Digg This  Add To Furl  Add To YahooMyWeb  Add To Reddit  Add To NewsVine

This post has been edited! Adam Gartenberg at IBM flagged that their FAQ entry needs to be updated. In fact you need a Sametime Standard licence to run a BlackBerry or any other mobile device as a Sametime Entry license is not sufficient.  Thanks for the update Adam!

Recently my colleague Gabriella Davis clarified the differences between the Sametime Client and the Sametime Embedded Client, the limited entitlement that comes with your Notes Client. I thought it might also be useful to share some more info on how the current Sametime licensing works for BlackBerry users.

Basically If you want to extend someone's Sametime to BlackBerry or any other mobile device then you just need to purchase a Sametime Standard license. If you only have the Sametime Embedded Client then you are entitled to use Sametime on your Notes Client but not on any other device.

You can see this question specifically answered in this IBM FAQ here:

www.ibm.com/software/lotus/products/sametime/faq.html

"Q. Does the Lotus Notes instant messaging entitlement also include the right to extend my presence awareness and instant messaging capabilities to a mobile device?
A. No. The limited use entitlement allows for the use of a select set of capabilities within the Lotus Notes/Domino environment. If you wish to extend instant messaging and presence awareness outside of the Lotus Notes/Domino environment to wireless devices, licenses for Lotus Sametime software are required."

So if you want to enable people to extend their Sametime to any mobile device then you just get them a full function Sametime Standard license. This Sametime Standard licence gives anyone the right to install Sametime Connect for free and access their Sametime through other devices such as a BlackBerry.

Its then the individual who is licensed to use the Sametime capability, regardless of the device that delivers this capability, much as applies to the Lotus Notes license.

This is supported by the Software License Agreement document which states “Your acquisition of Per User Licenses for the Program as set forth above authorizes an equal number of users to install and use the IBM Lotus Sametime Connect client on one or more computers.” A copy of the Sametime Standard Software Licence Agreement is here.

Picked up some BlackBerry for Domino stats from RIM at Lotusphere.

Currently there are 12,000 Domino BES deployed worldwide, the majority being on 4.1. These Domino BES carry some 1.1 million smartphones, and there are some 30 compatible handheld devices available from RIM and their partners.

Gartner predicts rise of "pocketable devices"

Gartner have stared into their crystal ball and put together 10 top predictions for IT organisations and users.

With my Notesberry hat on the most interesting is this one: "By 2012, 50 per cent of travelling workers will leave their notebooks at home in favour of other devices. Even though notebooks continue to shrink in size and weight, travelling workers lament the weight and inconvenience of carrying them on their trips." Personally from what I have already seen happening in the market I think that 50% could be a quite cautious prediction.

You can see all 10 here - http://gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=593207

As Bill Buchan spotted you can now download RIM's own presentations from Lotusphere 2008 from their BlackBerry Resource Center at:

http://www.resourcecenter.blackberry.com/main.php?page=lotusphere2008

To get access to the presentations you will need to register - which is pretty straightforward. While Firefox can view the slides I think you need to be in IE to download them, certainly that's what worked for me.

The topics covered in these sessions include:
  • Best Practices for BlackBerry Administrators
  • Mobilizing Applications: Lotus Domino Databases
  • Architecting a Highly Available BlackBerry Solution
  • Mobilizing Applications with the BlackBerry Browser
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server v4.1.5 Performance Enhancements

Well another Lotusphere is past and so its time for a well considered review piece full of wise thoughts, sage words and staggering insights. Sadly my review will have none of those but here it is anyway.

If there is one thing that has impressed me its RIM's commitment to Lotus and vice versa. Both companies development teams are working closely together and the result is a steady stream of developments and new Client interfaces. Announcements of new contractual relationships are seldom earth-shattering news. Yet to have an announcement of a new Lotus/RIM relationship by Mike Rhodin (General Manager of Lotus) at the Lotusphere keynote in front of 8,000+ attendees shows long-term commitment on both sides to making it work.

I also think that RIM have outlined the right vision for the role of the BlackBerry being to mobilise the whole Lotus family. Effective collaboration is seen to be critical to business success, so in my view key collaboration tools such as Domino applications, Sametime, and Connections should be to hand whenever and wherever the need for them arises. Its worth noting that RIM have said that they want to steadily develop the potential in the whole family of Lotus products and not just "cherry pick" temporary opportunities. So for example they are continuing to develop their existing Notes Mail and Domino apps functionality alongside developing whole new Clients for Connections and Quickr.

There were some good announcements of future developments - and it was good to see RIM prepared to share them with us. For me the key announcements were around resilience, a key issue as it seems to me that a BlackBerry service becomes business-critical the minute its switched on. So we welcome the improved monitoring and eagerly look forward to ARGON and the server "failover" solution.

I would also like to thank Lizzie Hancock, RIM Lotus Segment Marketing Manager EMEA, for helping us run a Notesberry social event at Lotusphere. Just as in the early days of Lotus I think there is a real need to build up a community around BlackBerry and the Lotus products to share experiences and skills to get the most from them.

Can I just add that Sametime on the BlackBerry really came into its own for me at Lotusphere. The ability to instantly contact each other was invaluable to coordinate our plans, answer queries from our UK office, and (most importantly of all) meet in the bar.....

RIM announce Range of BES Software Improvements

RIM have announced a range of BES software improvements that will be phased in new releases over the first half of this year. Some of these Valerie Wang had covered in her mobilization session earlier this week. The full RIM press release with all the detail is here:

http://www.blackberry.com/news/press/2008/pr-22_01_2008-01.shtml

And thanks to Bastian for flagging this press release to me.

Future plans to enhance BES availability have been a recurring question at the RIM booth and also on this site. So its good to see the planned introduction of improved BES monitoring so you can get early-warning of issues before they impact your installation. Monitoring is available in the latest 4.1 Service Pack 5 release and you can see details of exactly what else is in the latest release here:

Valerie Wang, RIM Enterprise Product Manager for IBM Technologies, presented a great Lotusphere session.

Valerie Wang, RIM Enterprise Product Manager for IBM Technologies, presented a great Lotusphere session. The best part was that it gave an overview of the whole range of integration between BlackBerry and the Lotus product range. RIM plan to mobilize the Lotus product family with BlackBerry. Here are some highlights:

Notes Mail, Calendar an PIM - RIM are continuing to develop this area - future developments include HTML mail, free/busy lookup (as if you are "walking past their desk") and native attachment download to a SD card.

Sametime BB Client - Looking to develop integration with the address book, integration with your buddy list so you can click on your Sametime buddy list or a chat to make a call, plus tweaks to make use easier such as presence management from your home screen.

Application Development - A big theme from RIM and to help show what you can do they are offering sample code at http://www.blackberry.com/go/lotusphere For example there is a mobilized discussion database in there.

Quickr BB Client - Valerie demo'd a Quickr Client which has been developed as a proof of concept. Watched it share docs and was impressed. Valerie asked people to let her know if a Quickr BlackBerry client would be good - if you want to add your voice to the many people who said yes then please contact her. Just contact me and I will send you her contact details.

Websphere Portal BB Client - Again Valerie demo'd a new client for the portal

Workflow - There is now code to mobilize any Domino database, you just drop it into the template (well that is what they said). Just go to  http://www.blackberry.com/go/lotusphere Hopefully that site should now be live.

Connections BB Client - This was demo'd at the Keynote on Monday. The internal Beta of the client by RIM and IBM is starting next week with launch scheduled for February.

This is a pretty impressive line-up, and it reflects RIM's commitment to Lotus. Have suggested to RIM that the post their presentation and will link to it if they do.

Great opening session at Lotusphere with Mike Rhodin, IBM Lotus General Manager, acknowledging the close links between BlackBerry and Lotus by announcing a new closer relationship with RIM. This was reflected in the strong RIM presence at Lotusphere and Valerie Wang, RIM's Domino Development leader, emphasising the strong links between the Lotus and RIM development teams.

The BlackBerry also featured in the keynote demos, notably the new Connections client. RIM are also working on a BB client for Quickr too.

We at Turtle were  pleased to be asked by RIM to develop a BlackBerry-compatible database for just their own sessions at Lotusphere. This is mainly for internal use as RIM are running a very interesting BlackBerry "track" in Europe 8 with technical info,  best practices and customer experiences.

If you want to download the RIM database showing just their BlackBerry sessions then just go to http://lotusphere.turtleweb.com/rim on your BlackBerry browser. To emphasise again this specially commissioned app from RIM only covers the BlackBerry sessions from RIM's own "track" at Lotusphere.

Of course we have also added these RIM sessions onto our own free Lotusphere session database which has the full list of all sessions etc. This is the comprehensive sessions listing we provide every year that you can download right onto your BlackBerry We are now up to 900 downloads of our Lotusphere sessions database to date!

You can download / update your copy of our Turtle sessions database by going to http://lotusphere.turtleweb.com/bb  on your BlackBerry browser.

Welcome to NotesBerry!

Welcome to "NotesBerry" - the site for Domino and BlackBerry users

NotesBerry has been created for people interested in getting to know more about what BlackBerry and Domino can do. Coming back loud and clear from the Lotus community is that BlackBerry & Domino are a powerful partnership - working together they link people anywhere anytime, and deliver the systems they need, literally right into their hand.

BlackBerry is more than just email - you can go beyond voice, email, text and Sametime IM to extend or develop Domino business apps out to BlackBerry devices. So now any app can go "mobile".

We hope to use this new site to share views, knowledge and experiences within the BlackBerry and Domino community so we can all get the most from this great partnership. We also intend to publish white papers, technical studies and 'tips' on this site.

A big thankyou to Bill Buchan, Jason Hook and Paul Mooney for getting NotesBerry off the ground.

"Connect With The Experts" London Event

Category
Bookmark : del.icio.us  Technorati  Digg This  Add To Furl  Add To YahooMyWeb  Add To Reddit  Add To NewsVine

RIM put on a great BlackBerry "Connect With The Experts" event in London recently. For me it drove home how BlackBerrys and similar devices are changing expectations. Currently we are only making specific processes, applications or just email "mobile" but there is a growing expectation that everything should be mobile as a matter of course. As BlackBerry put it this is "holistic mobility" - everything available everywhere.

BlackBerry have now shipped 20 million devices but they see the future potential market as huge. So they are continuing to invest with the new BES 4.1.5 due out soon and the new BES release - code named ARGON - out next May.

ARGON will have some cool new stuff such as a new Admin UI, improved roles and groups, auto tasks, enhanced monitoring and high availability. Beyond ARGON RIM are also working up the next generation of BES code named NEON out sometime after 2008.
